Sol Underground is an QTPOC-led ecosystem of abolitionists working to dismantle systems of oppression and build community-led infrastructure that resists and disrupts state oppression. Rooted in non-hierarchical practices, we work to enable poor, working-class, and unhoused Black communities burdened by white supremacy, capitalism, and more harness their collective power and transform their material conditions. We directly challenge systemic barriers by creating sustainable, community-managed infrastructure that provides essential resources, support, and opportunities that promote the well-being and empowerment of our communities. We are tired of band-aid solutions that continue to harm marginalized communities which is why our work is dedicated to enhancing the power and capacity of disenfranchised communities, growing the connections between them, and ultimately facilitating broader structural changes in our social, political, and economic systems.

Our mission is to dismantle oppressive systems while constructing alternatives to state oppression anchored in non-hierarchical practices that enable marginalized communities to harness their collective power and transform their material conditions.

We envision a future where liberation and self-determination are the default. A future where all oppressive systems have been replaced by sustainable community-led infrastructure that provides the resources, support, and opportunities that promote the well-being and empowerment of all people. A future without police, incarceration, poverty, gender based violence, racism, anti-Blackness, homophobia and everything that continues to harm us today. We know this world is possible and through our unwavering commitment to justice and liberation, we will continue to work towards this future until every last person is free.

Sol Underground was founded in 2016 as a youth-led art collective dedicated to uplifting Black artists with marginalized identities (Black Women, Black Queer Folks, Black Disabled Folks, Black Trans Folks, etc) living in Atlanta. In the wake of the 2020 uprisings, our organizing team made the decision to transition from an art collective into a community-led ecosystem of abolitionists dedicated to building a grassroots movement of QTBIPOC organizers fighting for our collective liberation. With the increasing threat of facism, police violence, unstable housing markets and imploding capitalist systems, we realized early on that organizing with poor, working class, and unhoused communities was the key to building a liberated future. With that in mind, we decided to transition to an autonomous decentralized model of organizing that prioritizes the knowledge and lived experiences of Black and Brown organizers and operates in direct opposition to systems of hierarchy, domination and exploitation. In late 2020, we expanded and built a community-led art and community space in a historically Black neighborhood on the westside of Atlanta that successfully ran for 13 months. The space was an incubator for our work that welcomed people of all backgrounds and kept us grounded in our commitment to building community. We held free/low cost classes, skillshares, workshops, art shows, dance parties, yoga, community dinners, had a robust free store/pantry, and even used the space as emergency short term housing when needed. Although the space was only around for a brief time, it was an experiment in community building that became a catalyst for the work we do today.
